Recipe needs a name

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 7:14 AM

Hello everyone. I'm a long-time lurker. I've posted rarely before but I want to thank everyone for the volumes of information you've shared and the tremendous help you've been in the past. Thank you!

I need your help again. I've just re-discovered the simple recipe below and can't remember the name of it. It might just be so simple that it has no more distinctive name than the one I've given it. If anyone knows what this is "officially" called, I'd love to know. Any variations on this dish would also be quite welcome.

You know when there's a band you love and it's put out so many singles over the past 15 years that you forget that one even exists? That just happened to me with Our Lady Peace's Right Behind You. Which is weird, because it was one of my favorite singles. Patricia is gonna slap me for forgetting it existed, haha. (PS: Raine Maida, you're very very awesome.)

I had to get a billion shots yesterday. Okay, well, only a few, including tetanus and hepatitis. And to get these I had to wait at the hospital from like, 8pm-10:45. It was awful, I just wanted to sleep. When the nurse got around, I was like, oh thank GOD, stick me with needles!

Knife Help

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 3:37 AM
I'm looking into getting a new set of knives, but I know absolutely nothing about knives.

Money isn't too much of an issue, but, as always, lower prices are appreciated.

A few things I'd like to know in particular, but any advice is appreciated:

-I know there are porcelain knives. Are these good? Are they super expensive? Worth even looking into?

-A lot of knife sets come with a set of steak knives. Necessary or no?

-What type of knives should one look at getting for a basic kitchen set? They have knife sets with quite a few blades, but I'm not sure how many of those I even know what to do with. If I were to think off the top of my head, I could see a use for a "general" knife (chef's knife?), a paring knife, a fillet knife, a bread (serrated knife), kitchen shears, and a knife sharpener. Anything I'm missing?

-Good brands, bad brands, places to look, places to avoid.

-Any other relevant information.

Thanks guys!

Celtic languages

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 11:38 PM
I've been really interested in Celtic languages lately, and I have a few questions. First off, how much of a difference is there between Irish and Scottish Gaelic/Gallic? (Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong. I've only just begun to research them.) Also, being a native English speaker and with conversational ability in French, how much of a stretch would it be to try to tackle this? Also, do any of you know of good resources I can use to help me learn?

I don't want to become fluent (yet anyway), I just think it would be a fun and interesting language to study.

[I found out recently that my heritage is German, French, British, and Scottish/Irish (typical American mutt). That's what sparked the interest]

EDIT: Based on a few constructive criticisms, I've made a few revisions to reduce confusion and/or my chances of offending someone.

Choose life?

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 9:54 PM
As a wise man once said "If you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, then go home and burn all your records, all your tapes, and all your CDs because every one of those artists who have made brilliant music and enhanced your lives? Real fucking high on drugs. The Beatles were so fucking high, they let Ringo sing a few songs." And damn if it ain't true. Drugs are one of the greatest influences on modern music as we know it. It's called "sex, drugs and rock 'n roll" for a reason!

Drugs, their history and their cultural impact have always fascinated me. Did you know Bayer, the friendly company that makes lifesaving aspirin, was the company that first synthesized heroin? Cocaine was good for tooth aches and coughs. Hypodermic needles could be bought out of the Sears catalogue for two dollars.

While it's important to remember the lives and brilliant talent drugs have taken from us, it's equally as important to examine the valuable creative element drugs have been to our popular culture. From every speed-freak author writing a roadtrip novel in three days, to every self-medicating tortured soul, drugs became the avenue for creation.

I HAS AN AMY!

Also, we have obtained awesomeness! There was Grunberg-ness, the Middleman panel was made of fantasticness and win and energy and win and wonderfulness, the minx panel (an imprint of dc) was fun, and the eye on the past sf/f panel made me want to buy books, though it somewhat convinced me that peter david is a dick but that connie willis is made of sunshine and puppies and awesome.

i also now have shirts! i has a nerd herd shirt, a central city track team shirt, and an atlantis swim team shirt. and other stuff. it is ftw.

amy and i are lame though and we came back to the hotel. otoh, we have cookie dough here and that is awesome.

Oh, I just remembered: I heard the Maroon 5/Rihana (?) remix of If I Never See Your Face Again on the radio the other day, and I just have one question.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY ALL ON?

It's a great song on its own and the music is made for Adam's voice, not Rihana's wannabe-sultry-but-ends-up-lazy voice. And they didn't even bother to change some of the male-oriented lyrics to fit her? What the fuck.

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 9:47 AM

I first read The Kite Runner on Good Friday this year. Hosseini chose a brilliant title for that book, because still, whenever I hear the word 'Afghanistan' I think 'The Kite Runner'. Which makes me think of that scene. Which hurts. So all things considered, I put of reading A Thousand Splendid Suns for as long as I could.

The problem I had with The Kite Runner is...fairly ridiculous. It felt too real, to me. In fact it, for the most part, felt so real that I forgot it was fiction. Which meant that when something happened, when someone appeared so coincidently, I thought 'There's no way that would have happened'. Only then, of course, I remembered that The Kite Runner was fiction, and that these coincidences were perfectly allowable, and even necessary. Sometimes that was a little jarring; I didn't have the same problem with A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a story full of love and hope. It is about the strength of the human spirit, even in the worst of situations.

Yukon Gold potato overload!

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 8:20 PM
Hi guys and dolls!

Yesterday on a whim I grabbed the orphanage sized bag of Yukon Gold potatoes at Costco, and now I'm wondering what else to do with them besides the usual (gratin, mash, or potato salad).

Any ideas? I'm even willing to try another gratin or salad if it deviates from the usual methods (cheddar cheese gratin or your typical mayo based salad).

Thanks in advance :) I'm just at a loss for ideas even after surfing recipezaar, allrecipes, and epicurious for over 30 mins for inspiration.

P.S. No fries, as much as I love them I am trying to eat healthier.

Future Plans

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I am seriously considering becoming a nurse, or at least a CNA in the near future. I might be crazy, in fact I am pretty sure I am, but it's the first thing I've been passionate about and fought for in a long time so this... I'm willing to go with.

Thoughts, comments, advice, anything? I'm a little lost and bereft at the moment, even with my research and a job/school plan. I could use thoughts, encouragement, constructive criticism, etc.

The current plan is to try and schmooze my way into a patient care tech position at a local hospital and get them to pay for my RN AA at a local college. Barring that, I'll get my CPR and Basic Life Saving certs on my own dime/time and apply again. Barring THAT I will go for a lesser position at the hospital and try to move up. And if THAT doesn't work I think I'm just going to jump into the weekend program and Gwynedd Mercy and go for my RN.

So that's the big "life change" plan I've been alluding to and I'd really, seriously appreciate any input people have.

Flanken?

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 7:40 PM
A while back I saw a bunch of entires about short ribs, or flanken style short ribs?
I picked some up the other day but now cant seem to find the recipes that were posted here that looked intriguing enough for me to pick up the meat!!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

(sorry, I know I sound like a total newbie, but I couldnt find the recipe in the memories.)

There's that ego again!

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:09 PM
I'm just not an athlete. Never have been - well, perhaps a modicum of talent at squash - but other than that, never will be. So its frustrating for me that I will never be a very good horseback rider. Yeah, I can sit on Molly and not fall off (at least so far), but when her owner or the instructor at the barn give me riding directions, I just don't get it. How exactly am I supposed to move my weight back when I'm posting at the trot? Or how do I understand whether I'm leaning too far forward enough when I can't see myself do so? How do I relax during Molly's canter, when she suddenly remembers that she's got a lot of racehorse heritage and would like to put it to use by running back to the barn ASAP?

So while my mind can program a computer or even comprehend Kant (sometimes), it turns out to be pretty rotten at telling my body what to do. It's frustrating that riding well doesn't come as naturally to me as thinking does, because I'm used to being able to pick things up easily. And I get ashamed of being regarded as slow to learn when I'm not for most other things. It's probably all good, though - the fact that I have to fight hard against my body's confusion to regain my riding skills is probably strengthening my mind as well as my body. I just wish the process could be a little less embarrassing!

So anyway, yesterday my body finally felt back on track again after the brownie overdose. While many people have told me that the craving for sweets goes away after you go off them for a while, I think my cravings are more habitual and related to emotions rather than physical...so I still feel them! At least when I'm around them. If you handed me four of those old wonderful cream cheese brownies from Mt Holyoke right now, I'd still probably eat all four! So I just have to keep on reminding myself how much healthier, happier, and creative I feel when I'm not under the sway of the demon Sugah...Plus I still like the look of my face better without a double chin when I look at my toes. It looks more like a proper Ernst face now that a good deal of the blubber is gone...

Black, Holly: Tithe

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 10:30 PM
Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale
Writer: Holly Black
Genre: YA/Urban Fantasy
Pages: 331

Yes, I'm reading ridiculously fast lately.

The next offering is Holly Black's Tithe, so if you're a fan of faeries, you should check this out. I'm NOT a fan of faeries, and read this solely because I was interested in Black's work. And having already read Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely and Elizabeth Bear's Blood and Iron, a lot of this book felt very, very familiar to me, even though this book was published first.

Still, I enjoyed it, but mostly for the romantic elements than anything else, though Black does have some lovely bits of prose in her pages.

The premise: Kaye's always seen faeries. Hell, they were her "imaginary" friends when she was a kid. But since then, she's traveled the country with her rock-star mom, and has since grown out of touch with her faerie friends. But when an incident forces her back home to Jersey, she soon learns her friends weren't imaginary at all, and what's more, they need her help. Unfortunately, her help could mean her death.

The full review, with spoilers, is in my LJ. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome.

REVIEW: Holly Black's TITHE

Happy Reading! :)

JUST SAW DARK KNIGHT STOP

MIND BLOWN STOP

PLEASE SEND REPLACEMENT STOP

Jul. 24th, 2008

  • 9:40 PM
what's this? two in one week? balderdash! actually i just had to post because i'm scaring myself with this skinny bitch thing. i've bought soy creamer and soy milk for my cereal and rice milk to drink, been snacking only on raw almonds and pumpkin seeds and organic granola all week, eaten fruit for breakfast every day, and i just went to whole foods for dinner and got a vegetarian egg roll, vegan dumplings and a shitton of steamed veggies, and ate it in like two minutes flat. and it was fucking delicious. not that the veggies-taste-good thing was news to me, but srsly, it's scary how if i just stop being a pansy about money and decide to shop at WFM it's so easy to eat healthy. i mean, it's easy NOT to eat healthy there too, hello bakery case full of truffles and tortes and other sinful goodies... but there are so many things there that i LIKE to eat that fall into the category of 'this will not fuck up your body chemistry'. i'm still drinking coffee (and, currently, a circus boy-- they had that at WFM too) and eating meat and stuff, but this week i've been way more discerning in my food choices, and i really feel good. not like i wake up feeling like giselle from 'enchanted' every morning, but i have had more energy and needed to spend fewer lunch breaks PTFO asleep in my car. >.>;;;;;

still have not seen dark knight or mamma mia OR PRINCE CASPIAN OR INDIANA JONES OR WANTED OR ANYTHING ELSE. just get smart. which was good, but still. i need to go to the movies more. hopefully when that girl is working who thinks i'm still a mt holyoke student who perpetually forgets her ID. XD

Drugs

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 7:28 PM
I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity when I saw just how many songs I have about drugs. Thankfully, I got over in time to post couple of my favorites.

First up, my all-time favorite song about drugs (well, other than Insane in the Brain *g*). I could never not dance to this at the club. Heavy beat, funky electro, and screaming. Yep. Sounds like an acid trip. D/l just for the line: "I'm the White Rabbit"
My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult - A Daisy Chain 4 Satan
Buy Confessions of a Knifehere.

If you are ever in need of a shopping list, you can count on this song. LOL I love the driving beat, the repetition and that it lists seven drugs... one for each day of the week. Also, bonus Rob Halford.
Queens of the Stone Age - Feel Good Hit of the Summer
Buy Rated R here

I love The Dandy Warhols best when they are mocking their scene and this is a fine example.
"shouldn't you have got/
A couple piercings and decided/
Maybe that you were gay"?
Ouch! ...and also, Hee!

Wolverine Surprises Comic-Con

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Hugh Jackman, star of the upcoming film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, made a suprise appearance at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 24, bringing with him the first footage from the highly anticipated prequel movie.
Today's suck, let me show you it.

I was at work, taking a walk outside while the rain had stopped. Because it's me, it started again, and I didn't have an umbrella. I was just across from the parking garage then, so I thought I would just cut across the field and get the umbrella from my car and then all would be well.

What I failed to take in consideration was how soggy and muddy the ground was. A few steps in, and I lost my left shoe. I went back to get it, and lost my right shoe. So here I am, attempting to sprint across the field (and sinking into the ground every few steps) in my socks, carrying muddy shoes, in an attempt to get into the parking garage before it gets any worse.

I did eventually make it to my car, retrieved the umbrella and attempted to dry out my shoes. The last bit didn't quite go so well, so ever since 2pm, I've had grit in my shoe and cold, muddy feet.

Thank god tomorrow's Friday, that's all I have to say.
